1. General
1.1 Is a lead time of less than 3 months possible?
Luke has only a limited number of hours available for the lockservice. If you genuinely need your lock sooner, then Luke can possibly give you a higher priority. A really short lead time is sometimes not possible. If a shorter lead time is needed, then please indicate this in the order form or via the contact form. We request you to be considerate of Luke and other customers and to not ask for a short lead time unnecessarily. If you place your order on time then you help improve the service, for everybody.
1.2 Can I give you my lock at a carfair?
Yes, you can bring your lock to a carfair that we attend. You will receive an order form that you need to fill out. It would be good to give us your business card if you have one.
1.3 Do you handle other locks than carlocks?
Yes, we also handle motorbike locks and cylinder locks in general. Most locks are cylinder locks. A cylinder lock contains a cylindrical plug that turns with the key.
1.4 Do you sell locks or lock parts?
No, the diversity in the area of automotive locks is too large. It is not economically feasible.
2. Key by Lock
2.1 Can you also give my lock a check-up?
This is not part of the Key by Lock service. We will pay no attention to the functioning of the lock, no matter its condition. If you want us to do this then choose for our Lock Restoration service. We advise people to choose for this service. Firstly, we will only do the restoration work if your lock needs it. Secondly, the restoration work is only a limited part of all the work required and will therefore have only a limited impact on the price.
2.2 Why does a key by lock not have a fixed price?
The production of a key from a lock is a service. The condition and the complexity of the lock determine how much time it takes. It can take up to several hours. The price we give as a result of the intake inspection is a fixed price. So if we later discover that the work takes longer, we will absorb the extra costs. Occassionally it happens that producing the key costs less than our standard estimate. You will then receive an invoice for a lower amount.
2.3 Will the key also open my other locks?
This is often the case, but we do not guarantee it. If one key opens several locks then those locks are keyed-alike.
2.4 Will you also supply a transponderchip?
Cars manufactured after 1995 usually use a transponderchip. It is located in the key head. Classic cars do not use a transponderchip. We cannot supply you with a transponderchip, because the code the chip needs to be programmed with is not stored in the lock. If your car uses a transponderkey, then you need to go to a cardealer.
2.5 Help, I lost my keys!
If your car uses a transponderkey then you need to go to the dealer, they can usually produce a new key from your car's VIN number. If your car or motorcycle uses a traditional cylinderkey you can look for the key code. From this key code we can cut you a new key. Of course, we can also cut a new key from your lock. We always advice people to keep one key safely in reserve.
3. Lock Restoration
3.1 What quality can I expect?
The restoration aims to restore the functioning of the lock. We do not give any attention to the outside of the lock, unless you have requested this. The condition of the lock determines to what extend we can restore the lock's functioning. Usually the functioning can be fully restored.
3.2 What is "keyed-alike"?
Locks are keyed-alike if they can be opened with one and the same key. Locks that are keyed-alike give ease of use. Locks usually can be made keyed-alike if the all have the same keyway. The same key can then be inserted into each keyway.
3.3 What is "recoding"?
Recoding alters the lock such that it can be opened with a key with different cuts (bittings). The old key no longer works. To make a lock keyed-alike with another lock, it needs to be recoded. It is good to have your lock recoded when you no longer have a key, due to loss or theft.
3.4 What options are available for the recoding?
A lock can be recoded in four different ways. 1. To a key. Send the key along with the lock. 2. To a keycode. Use this option only if you are sure that you have the right keycode. 3. To a random keycode, chosen by us. 4. To another lock. Send us the second lock too. Use this option only if you have no key. We will also need to charge you for the second lock.
3.5 What is "check electrical contacts"?
An ignition lock contains electrical contacts. Our standard restoration does not include checking these contacts. You can indicate that we also should check the contacts. If we find them to be defective we will repair them.
3.6 What about the extra keys?
The restoration includes one working key. If you wish to have two keys then you choose for one additional key. Our page Key Types shows the different types of keys. The most common type is the cylinderkey, especially for classic cars.
3.7 Can you do chrome plating?
Yes, we have this service available. The plating is done by a professional electroplating company. The chrome plating does increase the price, of course. Enter in the remark field that you wish to have chrome plating done.
3.8 Can you repair a damaged lock?
A defective plug (core) can unfortunately not be repaired for price that is reasonable. Aluminum alloy plugs can tear. You can test for this by inserting a screwdriver into the keyway and turning it gently. If the keyway becomes wider, then the plug is torn. If the lock of your classic car is damaged, you can consult with Luke as to what your options are. If you send us a new lock that uses the same blank, we can recode it to your existing key.
